Overview of Dual Degree, Double Major, and Multi-Institutional Enrollment

Applying for Dual Degree

A student fulfilling requirements for two majors within different degree structures (e.g., one B.A. and one B.S.) can earn two degrees (e.g. a B.A. degree with a major in English, and a B.S. degree with a major in biology). Students wishing to add a second degree outside of their home college should fill out the Additional Degree Application form. The form is the same as the Change of College form but students select “I want to add an additional undergraduate degree” option on the form for correct application routing.

Applying for Double Major

Students who want to complete major requirements for multiple programs can do so in one or multiple colleges; this is considered a double major. Only the courses for the additional major need to be completed (e.g. a B.S. degree with a second major in English does not complete the additional B.A. language degree requirements). The transcript indicates that a student has completed the second major but does not indicate that a second degree has been awarded.

The process for adding a double major varies by college. Students wishing to add a second major in their current college typically contact their advisor to learn more about how to add on the major. Students wishing to add a second major in a different college typically contact the college directly to learn more about how to add on the major. Students do not submit the Change of College Form.

Applying for Multi-Institutional Enrollment

Students can temporarily enroll at another U of M campus while maintaining their enrollment at the Twin Cities campus and are referred to as multi-institutional students. Students considering this option should follow steps outlined at the multiple UMN campus webpage.
