Departments across the University of Minnesota regularly hire new staff. The university is committed to increasing diversity among its staff, and this includes hiring staff of color, people who identify as women, people with disabilities, and veterans in disciplines where they are underrepresented. The presence of implicit bias in staff searches can inhibit this goal.
This workshop will expose participants to the breadth of implicit bias research and will help them recognize shorts cuts that are the result of unconscious or unexamined bias. Participants will learn best practices and resources for addressing implicit bias in the context of staff search committees and hires made by individual supervisors. Faculty and staff participants of departmental search processes are invited to participate in this workshop.
